Holiday Side Dishes - Foodie Friday

In my house, our holiday side dishes don't vary too much from year to year. They include:
  • Mashed potatoes and gravy
  • Green bean casserole
  • Dressing
  • Corn
  • Cole slaw
  • Meatballs - yes they're a side here because our main meat is turkey
  • Sweet poatoes

Below you'll find some great ideas for holiday side dishes. Some of them may be more traditional, while others will be spins on classic dishes or dishes you may not have thought of as holiday. I hope you're able to find some great foods to add to your holiday menus.

Roasted Vegetables can be a great holiday staple. They're filling and many, like squash and zucchini, are at their peak in the fall. It's a great way to use up the last of your vegetable garden if you've got anything left come November. This particular way of roasting veggies has a twist though. Have you thought of putting a bit of Parmesan cheese on top to give it a kick of flavor? Sounds delicious to me!

This Roasted Sweet Potato Salad could be a great alternative to candied sweet potatoes or yams. You'll still get the sweet potato flavor you love, with the bonus of more veggies and less sugar than traditional candied yams or sweet potatoes. I think this looks like it's worth a try!

This Skillet Corn sounds like a fantastic way to get veggies on the table with a twist. The recipe calls for fresh sweet corn which by now is out of season. I would suggest using frozen sweet corn - either on the cob or off - or canned as a last alternative. It seems to be a twist of sorts on a traditional creamed corn, which I love!

These Roasted Green Beans could be a way to get similar flavors to traditional green bean casserole without all the heavy, creamy things that go into a traditional green bean casserole - blasphemy I know to suggest an alternative to green bean casserole, but well not everyone is a fan. I bet you could even add some of the crunchy onions to the mix to make it that much more like the traditional green beans found on many tables come holiday time.

What are your favorite holiday side dishes?
