This post brought to you by Schick Hydro Silk Razor for BzzAgent. Even though I received a sample for free, all opinions are 100% my own.
I am really by no means loyal to any one razor, so I typically get to try quite a few over the course of time. I buy what's on sale. I buy what I have a coupon for. I buy what looks pretty in the package. I buy what I've heard about recently from friends, reviews, etc. Point is, I buy my razors usually on a whim based on any of the before mentioned criteria.
You may remember that way back in December I reviewed another, in my opinion similar, razor. You may want to read that post if you haven't because I'll probably be comparing the two.
The razor I received came with 2 blades, the one on the handle and another for replacement later, as well as a little suction cup holder that you could use in the shower.
At first, I thought the little holder thing was a bit - much, odd, strange, unnecessary, take your pick of words listed and insert it here - but then I tried it. It's actually quite brilliant. It kept my razor off the little shelf I have in my shower and thus helped it dry faster after each use and I really think that has kept the blades sharper for longer.
Speaking of blades...
...there are 5 of them! It seems that many razors now have a five blade standard so that's nothing new or innovative. However, the fact that there are five as opposed to the one, two, three or four of other razors is something great! I really find that razors with five blades tend to do a much, much better job than those with less. I'm not sure what it is but the difference between a four blade razor and a five blade razor is a lot on my legs.
There's also a "water-activated moisturizing serum" around the blades that is supposed to help hydrate skin for up to two hours after shaving. I don't know that I noticed my legs were more moisturized than when I use any other razor that has claims of moisturizing strips or anything else of the sort. However I did noticed that they weren't as dry as when I use razors without moisturizing strips. That said, I can't say for sure if this moisturizes better, but I can say that it does moisturize.
The back of the package really illustrates the blades and moisturizing bit quite well.
The handle is great. It's non-slip and I really like the way it feels in my hand. I don't feel like I have to have a death grip on it to make sure I don't lose control and cut my legs up. It's contoured to fit my hand well and I just really like the design overall.
So how does THIS razor compare to others I've tried?
It's not my favorite, but I think it's still a good one. If I had to choose between Schick's Hydro Silk razor and Gillette's Venus Embrace I'd choose the Venus Embrace.
While they worked pretty much the same - they both got the job done - I just liked the feel of the Venus Embrace better. The Hydro Silk did a great job with the moisturizing post shave, but I wasn't so fond of the way the razor head fit onto the handle. For some reason it was a bit stiff and not as fluid/flexible as I like. It made me feel like I needed to apply more pressure to get the razor head to flex and get a super close shave.
On the positive side, I did not experience any razor burn after using this - on either my legs or armpits. I had no irritation at all and I still got quite a close shave. However, I did notice that I didn't get quite as close of a shave as I did with the Venus Embrace. I attribute that to the head/handle issue I mentioned above.
All of that said, I would still recommend you try it if you're in the market for a new razor. It does a good job, moisturizes skin post-shave and, if you get the right package, comes with a handy little holder for the shower!
Have you tried the Schick Hydro Silk Razor yet? What are you thoughts? Were you converted or do you prefer another razor?
