Birchbox September 2012 - First Thoughts/Impressions

September's Birchbox is all about fall trends and getting started on fall beauty. In addition to the beauty and lifestyle products, also included was a fall lookbook from Birchbox and a $25 gift card good for a purchase of $75 or more from Madewell.

Before I get into the products, I'd like to toss my 2cents out about the above mentioned lookbook and gift card.

First, the lookbook. Honestly, it's a cute idea. I actually sat down and read through most of it. I looked at all of the pictures and read about the ones that caught my eye. If you're listening Birchbox, it might be a cute idea to do one per quarter: Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall. Of course it looks like all of the products mentioned in it are available in the Birchbox store, which makes it easy for those who like what they see and aren't sure where else to purchase them. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong and they aren't all available at Birchbox)

Second, the gift card to Madewell. Birchbox, if you're listening this idea sucks. I understand you've probably got some sort of partnership with them beyond just tossing some info in your boxes and that's ok. However, this is not a gift card. A gift card gets me something for nothing out of pocket (except what I spend over that set amount). This is a coupon. A coupon gives me a certain amount off a purchase - either a set amount of money spent or a specific item purchased. Call it what it is. Also, after doing a little poking around the site, the cheapest thing I could find was a $4.99 shoe clip - it was originally $14.99! In addition, the sizing is ridiculous as well. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who can't wear any of those clothes.

And now on to the rest of the box!

kate spade new york Twirl - Full size $80 for 3.4 fl. oz. - Sample $1.18 for 0.05 fl. oz.

This makes 3 out of the last 3 boxes with perfume samples. While I do like perfume and I am looking for one that is affordable and one I would like to wear every day, I do not necessarily need to try a new one every month. The info card says this is supposed to be a mix of fruity and floral notes. That said, on first sniff this one is just eh. I really liked the one I got last month so much better.

Benefit The POREfessional - Full size $29 for 0.75 fl. oz. - Sample $9.67 for 0.25 fl. oz.

If you had asked me even just 3 short months ago if I was having a problem with my pores I would have said "yes." Asking me today, however, and the answer would be "not so much." Somehow I've managed to get them under control and they don't seem as monstrous. I already have 2 primers in my mess of makeup and I don't use either one very often. I've heard some pretty amazing things about this one though, so it might be worth a shot.

twistband™ Hair Tie - Full size $18 for 12 hair ties - Sample $1.50 for 1 hair tie

I have a lot of hair. It's long and thin, but there's a lot of it. I'm a little skeptical about whether or not this little bitty band will be able to hold up all my hair for more than 5 minutes. I'm also really curious about how well, and how long, it will hold its elasticity. The hair ties I currently use tend to lose their elasticity after just a few uses. Hopefully this one is better.

tili Bags Small Collection 1 - Full size $8.49 for 12 quart size bags - Sample $0.71 for 1 quart size bag

I would be lying if I said I was excited to see this pop up in my box this month. Truth is, I'm not. Yes, it seems to be a decent quality zip top bag. Yes, it would be handy for storing any number of things. Yes, it's actually a pretty cute pattern. My real problem with it is that it's just a zip top bag - and it would cost pretty near $1 for just 1! If I really wanted a baggie, I could buy a whole box at the grocery store for that $1. They would be much cheaper in quality and just clear plastic, but still.

Birchbox and Color Club® Custom Collection - Full size $8 for 0.5oz bottle - Sample $4 for 0.25oz bottle

This is the second Color Club polish I've gotten and this is by far my favorite. It's "Status Update" from the Birchbox collaboration of custom colors. It's a slate gray and looks like it might be a great color for fall. I can already see myself using it as a base color and doing some bright colored stamping over top, or even the reverse and using it to stamp over a brighter color. I'm excited to try it out.

boscia Soothing Cleansing Cream - Full size $26 for 5 fl. oz. - Sample $9.67 for 1.86 fl. oz.

This is supposed to be a preservative free cleanser that has a combination of willow herb and jojoba leaf. There was no scent I could detect, which is good. I hate when facial products are overly scented because it tends to linger and get annoying after a while. I'm not sure how quickly I'll be trying this though. My face has decided to revert to teenager status and has freaked out with breakouts. Most of the breakouts have cleared up and I'm just dealing with the scarring, but I'm not too keen on the idea of switching things up just yet in case there are more breakouts on the horizon.

Box Total: $26.72
